Cellar for up to 8 years. No need to decant before serving. The magnificent Chateau Fonreaud has a stunning setting at the highest point in the Medoc. The estate was originally named Font-réaux meaning “Royal Fountain”. According to local legend, in the 12th century the King of England drank from a spring here on the grounds. In 1962 it was purchased by Leo Chanfreau, an Algerian winemaker, who set to work rebuilding the property and improving its vineyards. Today it is run by the second and third generations of the family who look after around 38 hectares of vines planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Their vines are planted on gravelly soils over limestone and cultivated according to sustainable and environmentally-friendly agricultural practices. During the harvest the family carefully selects the best plots which are used for this wine. Once in the winery the fruit is crushed and destemmed before being fermented in small temperature-controlled tanks. The young wine is then aged in oak barrels for 12 months prior to bottling. Cassis, blackberry, and herbal notes dominate on the nose, while the first sip reveals an opulent, full-bodied wine with firm tannins and a long, lingering finish.
